Top ten kitchen trends for 2021

The best kitchen cabinets for your home in 2021

2020 was the year of the kitchen! Many of us are using it like never before. As well as its traditional role as the hub of food preparation, cooking and eating , kitchens in many homes have also begun to function as home offices, home schools, and even home gyms.

Spending so much time in the kitchen may have made you realise that it needs a bit of a makeover. And with all this additional use, it certainly deserves it!

So here are ten current kitchen trends that may help you to decide how to reward your hard working kitchen in 2021.

Small is beautiful Screenshot 2021-03-01 at 13.29.28

Even if your kitchen is small, it can still be beautiful. Especially if your kitchen is now being used in various different ways, you need to make the most of every inch of space.

With kitchen cabinets from DIY Homefit you have a great choice of space-saving options. For example our Space Tower tall larder unit – pictured right – is available in two standard heights and can also be made in custom sizes to fit your space exactly. This stylish cabinet has an adjustable shelf and five Legrabox drawers with internal drawer fronts. It is available in a variety of colours.

Combining tall wall units such as this, with smaller kitchen cabinets and drawers to fit around your appliances, ensures that you make the most of the space available, and have plenty of storage to hide away all your kitchen clutter and make the room practical for different uses.

Minimalist chic

Of course, a smooth streamlined look is fabulous for a larger kitchen as well as a smaller one. The key thing is to go for kitchen cabinets with clean lines, and to conceal as much kitchen storage as you can behind this minimalist frontage.

The kitchen shown below features kitchen cabinets with our handless J-Pull doors in Lacarre gloss white.

Kitchen islands

A kitchen island can be a lifesaver if your kitchen is now serving multiple purposes. As well as being a place to eat or just to stand round for a drink, it provides useful additional working surfaces and also more storage space. Perfect for home office and home schooling as well as food-related activities!

A variety of flexible storage in your kitchen is really important. One size fits all just does not work. Fortunately at DIY Homefit we provide not only a wide range of kitchen cabinets, but also many flexible storage solutions to fit inside them. Just to give you an idea of some of our storage solutions:

  • Pull out units
  • Organiser cupboards
  • Carousel cupboards
  • Cutlery drawers
  • Pan drawers
  • Wine racks
  • Spice racks
  • Pull out waste bins

With DIY Homefit you will be spoilt for choice in terms of smart storage solutions!

Hidden appliances

When considering storage solutions, also think carefully about your appliances. Which are you happy to have on display, and which would you prefer to conceal in a kitchen cabinet? The more hidden appliances you have, the more streamlined your kitchen will look. It will appear bigger, brighter and better.

Don’t limit your thinking just to larger appliances such as fridges and dishwashers. We’ve spotted a trend for a tea and toast station! This is an area where you can store your kettle and toaster to stop them cluttering the worktop, and can also sit and have your breakfast too. And why not?!

The kitchen shown below has plenty of room for quirky little areas of your choice. The acrylic ultragloss doors in metallic champagne give a gorgeous glossy finish to the kitchen cabinets. Time to play hunt the kettle?!

Blue and green

Many of us think of traditional colours for kitchens, such as white, black, or grey. But blues and greens are both very trending colours right now. Whether you prefer brighter colours or paler hues, blues and greens can both look stunning in your kitchen.

DIY Homefit supplies kitchen cabinets in a wide range of colours. So if you fancy going blue or green this year – or any other colour for that matter – we can help.

Pictured below are a bright blue kitchen and a pale green one. On the left, the kitchen cabinets are 5-piece panelled vinyl wrapped doors in Oakgrain Azure Blue, and the island is Light Grey. On the right we have a kitchen island with pale green Valore Fjord flat slab doors and kitchen cabinets with Graphite Denver Oak doors.

Two-tone kitchens

You’ll also notice from the above images that two tone kitchens are also trending right now. The tradition is for kitchen cabinets to be in matching colours, but why not think more creatively and plan a kitchen that combines two or more colours?

The way you do this is completely up to you. You could have an island in a contrasting colour to the main cabinets, as shown in the images above. Or you could mix and match the colours of the kitchen cabinets themselves. Or do both: if you look carefully at the kitchen above left you will see that some of the cabinets are painted in the same grey as the island, for a completely blended effect.

Light and shade

When planning your colours, don’t forget to include your kitchen work surfaces. There is a growing trend for dark work surfaces, which can create a rich and luxurious ambience whilst still managing to make your kitchen feel cosy. If you are worried about your kitchen looking too dark, then you could choose a pale colour for the walls or some of the kitchen cabinets, to achieve a good balance of light and shade.

The kitchen below features black worktops, combined with kitchen cabinets with Handleless J-Pull doors in Gloss Light Grey and also wood furniture and flooring to add a rustic effect.

Statement splashbacks

Another key area not to overlook is splashbacks. These can add the perfect finishing touch to your kitchen. At DIY Homefit we supply splashbacks and upstands in a wide range of colours and textures. So why not experiment with different colours and styles? We can provide samples on request.

The kitchen pictured below features kitchen cabinets with 5-Piece panelled doors in contrasting colours of Oakgrain Graphite and Light Grey. There is also a darker grey full length splashback behind the wall units housing the Belfast sink.

A kitchen of many contrasts, but it works really well, and the splashback really adds an edge – in every sense of the word!

Traditional and modern

One final word on style is to consider combining traditional and modern. We’ve looked at two tone kitchens, and how effective it can be to blend different colours together. But mixing and matching different styles also works well too.

The kitchen pictured below – featuring Bella vinyl-wrapped doors in Venice – is a lovely combination of different styles. The overhead beams, handled kitchen cabinets, sofas, bookcase and rug give it a reassuring and cosy feel, but then the sharp lines and monochrome colours of the kitchen island, stools, surfaces and splashback bring it completely on-trend for 2021.
