It’s time to spring clean your wardrobe!
Transform your bedroom wardrobes with a little help from us
Spring has sprung, and there is no better time to sort out your bedroom wardrobes. Does your daily routine include searching frantically through hangers worth of clothes, unable to find what you are looking for? Or when you do find it, realising it’s badly creased due to being scrunched up for so long?
And what about your wardrobe itself? How does it look from the outside? Is it still clean and smart, or has it definitely seen better days?
In this article we share a few tips about how to spring clean your bedroom wardrobes. We’ll take a look at:
- How to declutter the contents of your wardrobe;
- The best ways to store clothes inside your wardrobe;
- Quick ways to freshen up the outside of your bedroom wardrobes.
How to declutter the contents of your wardrobe
Imagine the joy of being able to open your bedroom wardrobes and see all your clothes and shoes easily – and be able to get to them instantly. But in order to be able to do this, a major declutter is likely to be needed. Which means that you need either to get rid of any items that are rarely used, or move them to a different place.
The best way to declutter clothing is to work by category : coats, dresses, trousers etc. Take out all your items in that category and decide which of the items you really love and/or really need. Everything else can go. Why take up precious wardrobe space with items that you don’t often use or don’t even like?
Also be mindful about how you get rid of items you don’t want. You may be able to pass them onto friends or family, or take them to a charity shop. Some items may be suitable for selling online, and making a bit of money towards other items that you need. Knowing that your unwanted items are going to a new home where they will be treasured can make it easier to get rid of them.
So be ruthless in your declutter. Work on the principle of “if in doubt, out”. Just think of all the lovely wardrobe space you will gain by doing so.
And don’t be tempted to hang on to clothes “just in case” you need them. For example, there may be that bargain dress you bought in a sale five years ago and has never fitted. Chances are it never will, so get rid of it. Also if there are items that take up space but you never use because they forever need maintenance such as dry cleaning or fiddly ironing, say goodbye to them too.
The exceptions to the above rule are those items which you don’t use often but definitely need. For example, holiday wear that you get out once or twice a year. Keep these items but store them out of the way. See the next section for some ideas on this.
The best ways to store clothes inside your wardrobe
Once you finish your declutter you should have far fewer items to store. Take your time to organise how you store these items so that everything is visible and easy to access.
When hanging clothes, it’s a good idea to do this by category and colour. For example dresses, jackets, tops, blouses, trousers, skirts and coats. Whatever the order, hanging clothes by category enables you to see what you’ve got more easily. It’s also well worth investing in good quality padded non-slip coat hangers to keep your clothes in the best possible condition.
A useful tip from fashion experts is to start with your hangers all facing the same direction then, as you wear items, turn them to face the opposite way. As time progresses, you will see which items you are never wearing, and next time you do a declutter you need to consider getting rid of these items.
If you also have shelves in your bedroom wardrobes, you can use these to store rolled or folded clothes, paired shoes, and handbags.
The essential thing is to be smart about how you store your clothes and other items in your wardrobe. However you do it, make sure that you use clever storage solutions such as those pictured below to maximise your storage space. We also mentioned earlier that there will be items you need to keep but don’t use every day. For example holiday wear or a ballgown. These items can be packed carefully in boxes or dress hangers and stored elsewhere, for example a spare wardrobe or cupboard, underbed storage or the attic. As long as they are carefully stored so they won’t come to harm – and are accessible enough to dig them out as needed – this is a better option than them taking up precious space in your bedroom wardrobes.
