Fun things to do in the home!
Remodel your home with custom fitted wardrobes from DIY Homefit.
Easter and now Summer have come and gone. It hasn’t been the year we were all hoping for or expecting…
Perhaps you had planned to get away on a trip either here or abroad, and would almost certainly have been arranging various gatherings with family and friends.
But we are now in a whole new normal; with most of us confined to our homes some, if not all, of the time… And even with restrictions easing, choosing to stay in, just to be safe.
What to do?
Many of us are fitting in work commitments and children’s educational activities into our daily routine, and are gradually getting into the flow of doing this. But it’s also important to take time to step aside from these things and ensure that you make time for yourself and for the family. Your home is still your home, and you need time to relax in the midst of everything else that is happening right now.
So here are a few ideas from DIY Homefit for fun things to do in the home over this seemingly neve ending period.
- Games and quizzes
Games are a great way to bring everyone together. Depending on the age of the kids, you could either get out all your favourite board games or perhaps have a go at some traditional party games such as pass the parcel, pin the tail on the donkey or musical statues.
If the weather is kind then some outdoor games would be good too. Depending on the size of your outdoor space you could organise a mini football or tag rugby session, some kind of bowling or adventure golf activity, or how about creating a mini circuit with activities such as skipping, throwing/catching, hoopla and obstacles.
Quizzes can also be great fun. Either create your own or look online for childrens’ quizzes and pub quizzes. You could also team up virtually with family or friends to see which team wins.
- Exercise
It’s really important to get plenty of exercise during this time, and there is a lot of exercise that you can do in and around the home.
Inside the home you could consider stretching exercises such as yoga and pilates, or how about using tins as free weights to exercise your arms. And who needs a step machine if there is already a flight of stairs in your home?
Also check out Youtube for a wide variety of exercise classes. Whether you are looking for a dance class, any kind of circuit training or perhaps Joe Wicks’ PE classes, there is plenty to choose from.
If you prefer to exercise outdoors then use whatever space you have to run or walk or create your own full body workout. There is very little you cannot do if you are prepared to be a bit creative about it.
- Movie night
Even though cinemas are closed, you can create your own movie night at home. There must be an old favourite movie that you all love, either on DVD or Netflix? So get out your drinks and popcorn – or whatever snacks are available – and snuggle up on the sofa to enjoy. If you have an open plan kitchen/living area then all the better – as everything is together!
If you were hoping to see a new film at the cinema, then do check out what is available online. Several streaming services – including Sky and Virgin Media – are now showing a selection of new movies, and this will include family movies such as Trolls World Tour. The cost is £15.99 for 48 hours, which compares well with cinema tickets for a family of four.
Also check online for other viewing options, as more events are being added daily. For example there are now some West End and Broadway shows online, and also a wide variety of music events.
- An Egg hunt
Who said egg hunts had to be limited to Easter? It’s not like we got to celebrate the real one properly anyway! Everything feels so strange this year, the rule book has been thrown out the window, so why not follow suit?
For very young children you can hide eggs around the home and garden and just set them off hunting, whereas older children may prefer an Egg hunt with clues. Either way, make sure that there are lots of small eggs along the way, leading to that big egg at the end.
Your hunt will be more fun the more different places that the eggs can be hidden. For example, the bedroom shown below (with our Integra bedroom doors in Oakgrain Grey) has so many possible hiding places it would keep little fingers busy for hours!
- Project planning
It’s always good to have something to look forward to. So whilst you’re all at home together, why not plan to do something special to your home once things do get back to normal again?
Perhaps spending more time together in the home has made you realise that it’s about time you updated your kitchen to meet the changing needs of your growing family?
Or is it time to upgrade one or more of the childrens’ bedrooms as they are becoming teenagers? Custom fitted wardrobes can ensure that you make the best use of every inch of space, even in the most awkwardly shaped bedroom, and can configure the furniture for the exact needs of the occupant.
So why not get the family involved in planning a project for your home later in 2020? Even better, there is then an incentive for them to use some of this time to start decluttering in preparation. Win-win!
We hope that you and your family stay well, and that the above ideas will help you to enjoy your time together and put it to good use.
