If you are not too confident about your DIY skills then here are a few hints and tips to get you started!
1. Do one room at a time
If you are planning to do more than one room do not make the mistake of starting them all at once! One thing at a time is best, otherwise you run the risk of getting overwhelmed by the chaos!
2. Measure up first
Make sure you take accurate measurements so that you know the quantities of materials you need and do not overbuy. A little time and effort at the beginning will save time and money later!
3. Don’t buy either the cheapest or more expensive tools
The cheapest are so for a reason – but don’t be seduced into spending more than you need to! Generally the mid-priced range are fine. Alternatively if you need a tool that you are not likely to use that often, you can always look into hiring it or perhaps borrowing from a neighbour, and you loaning them something in return.
4. Keep tools sharp and clean
Once you have tools you want to keep them that way. Cleaning them, sharpening them, and spraying them with oil will all help to keep them in peak condition..
5. Preserving Paint and Paintbrushes
To keep paint fresh, add four tablespoons of methylated spirits, seal and store. When you want to use it again, just stir. When painting over a period of a few days, paintbrushes do not need to be washed daily – they can be kept fresh by wrapping tightly in cling film and they will stay moist. To remove old paint stains, soften with linseed oil and then wipe off or for tough stains, scrape off with a razor blade.
6. Be careful with electricity!
This is the one area where you really cannot take risks. If you have any doubts or concerns then employ a qualified electrician. Remember to be careful when drilling walls and around sockets for the concealed wiring there. Also be aware that when using extension leads they must always be fully unwound to prevent overheating.
7. Work with the professionals
If you decide that you are really not able to do the job yourself, and that you need a good builder, do ask what you might be able to do in terms of preparation. This still keeps you involved hands-on in the process and will save you money. Remember, you can use our map to help you with find a qualified carpenter / fitter in your area.
