Too much clutter!
At DIY Homefit we were amused to read a recent article in BBC’s magazine about how people have too much clutter! Apparently we all have “more stuff than we could ever need – kit we don’t use, toys we don’t play with, and clothes we don’t wear.”
This whole subject has been the topic of recent research by a team of anthropologists at UCLA – the University of California in Los Angeles who concluded that we are living in “the most materially rich society in global history, with light-years more possessions per average family than any preceding society”. We are now at a point of “material saturation”!
The reason for this “clutter crisis” is apparently all to do with something called “evolutionary psychology”. For the first time in many generations, people in the West are now living in an age of abundance. Material goods are no longer expensive and scarce as they used to be – but our inbuilt impulses have yet to catch up. As a result, many of us are filling our homes and lives with “extraordinary clutter”, and feel as if we’re simply suffocating under too much stuff.
Many of us have probably made it a new year’s resolution to clear the clutter! It is still early in 2015 so if it has not quite happened yet then don’t despair. There’s a lot of wisdom in the words of William Morris: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” Perhaps a gradual assessment and clear out of each room in the home along these lines is the best way to go about decluttering. Yes this will take time but hopefully it will be a thorough and lasting achievement. Meanwhile, help is at hand!
