How to give your partner more wardrobe space!

Domestic bliss with custom fitted wardrobes from DIY Homefit

Wardrobes are always a source of fascination. Many of us will have read the wonderful CS Lewis book “The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe”: and perhaps remember as children looking longingly at the backs of wardrobes in our homes, searching for the elusive magical Narnia.

But it is amazing what you can find in a wardrobe. If you share one with your partner, then perhaps even more so!

Sharing a wardrobe is never easy. Each of you will claim that the other has far too much space and that your need is greater. Each of you will have things in there that completely annoy the other and that you wish they would move somewhere else. And if one of you is very messy and the other a neat freak you have the recipe for domestic disaster!

So how can you make the most of your wardrobe space and keep everybody happy?

The first thing to look at is what space you actually need, and store each item in the best possible way. Try the following tips:

  • If an item can be folded then don’t waste precious hanging space on it. For example a T-shirt or sweater – even some styles of jeans. Instead use a drawer or the shelf at the top of the wardrobe, if there is one.
  • Hang trousers in a folded style rather than full-length. You can maximise wardrobe space by having layered hanging rails, as shown below.

  • Give long clothes the space to fully hang, or they will become creased.
  • If you have items made of silky or sheer fabrics use cloth hangers as this will prevent them slipping off into the bottom of the wardrobe
  • Use pull-out trays or dividers to organise accessories such as ties, scarves and belts.
  • Use other hooks in your bedroom or bathroom to air out recently worn clothes or sports clothes, so that only fresh clean clothes are stored in your wardrobe itself.
  • Store shoes and bags neatly and in an upright position – either at the bottom of the wardrobe or the top shelf, or in a special storage unit such as the one below.

If you realise that you really do need more wardrobe space – but can only fit one wardrobe into your bedroom – then you might want to consider a custom fitted wardrobe. This would mean making the most of every inch of space in your bedroom and maximising the storage capacity of your wardrobe. Most bedrooms have some dead space in them somewhere so why not use this more effectively?

The image below left shows how you can extend a wardrobe to fit into a sloping space. Instead of leaving a gap either side of a central wardrobe the side compartments have been added and can be used to store smaller items effectively. The image below right shows how every inch of wall space can be filled with wardrobes and matching smaller cupboards to maximise storage space. The overall effect of both rooms is stylish and spacious – with no sign of clutter!
